This picture is nothing amazing in contrast to many photos of the wonder that the Great Outdoors holds. It’s nice, but it isn’t as breathtaking as the northern lights, the Grand Canyon, or the Grand Tetons.
However, like many of these outdoor moments, it represents something significant to me: my first solo weekend backpacking trip. It was a bear. I overpacked significantly and hiked from the bottom of the mountain at Deep Creek up to Clingman’s Dome and back. This was one of the views on the way up that motivated me through the hard work to keep going and keep in mind why hard trips are worth the pain.
